The Young Expert Programmes from The Netherlands support us by providing two new Young Experts (YEs) that will work for Ecopolis Europa and Kilimo Kisasa.

Our YEs, Vera Omtzigt and Noreen Lamoris Acaphye, will be stationed in Uganda at Kilimo Kisasa Ltd and they will work together to merge high quality seed potato production with soil regeneration, biodiversity restoration and wetland conservation. This ambitious assignment, the first of its kind in East Africa, is applauded and supported by many stakeholders and partners in Uganda and The Netherlands.

A few months ago we planted newly received mini-tubers from The Netherlands provided by HZPC Holland B.V. Now Sagitta G1 (generation 1) are harvested and ready to be stored until germination, after which these will be replanted for multiplication.

Remember we shared that we received the very first Sagitta mini-tubers from HZPC in Uganda?!

They have been planted and are already germinating within a week! The ideal temperature and moisture in the soil have made these babies to germinate and grow extremely fast. This tasty variety is great for French fries and cooking, and is very easy to cultivate for farmers in Uganda while we help them with the market. We, at Kilimo Kisasa , cherish this moment and give the best care to this historical batch of Sagitta.

Last Sunday it was Potato Chips (or Crips) Day and from today we offer you Taurus by HZPC and Kilimo Kisasa . Taurus is ideal for crips and there is a high demand for this variety in eastern Africa.

Although crisps are not very nutritious, only as a snack aside, Taurus is a real opportunity for farmers and smallholder farmers in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, DRC, etc. Due to the high demand, farmers have a certainty for market and income. By support of HZPC, Kilimo Kisasa can guarantee a much lower price for farmers through its multiplication process which takes place in Uganda, compared to the import from the Netherlands. Next order of Taurus will be available from 2024.

The collaboration and partnership between HZPC and Kilimo Kisasa has resulted in the arrival of the first ever mini-tubers of Sagitta for multiplication in Uganda! We are very proud that HZPC entrusts their precious mini-tubers to us, through the help of Ecopolis Europa. Sagitta is a well-adapted potato variety great for table use and French fries. These mini-tubers will be the start of a long and fruitful partnership to provide affordable, high quality seed potatoes and to contribute to food security in eastern Africa.

As a large-scale mechanised seed potato producer, Kilimo Kisasa feels obliged to protect and recover the natural environment in Zombo district. Christopher of Embaka (African Golden Cat Foundation) helped us with a vegetation inventory to identify and map plant species in our wetlands. By identifying plant species, we are able to understand which indigenous species are already present and how the area needs to be managed in order to enhance biodiversity and recover nature in our Zombo swamps. This will benefit many insects, reptiles, birds and mammals (like the otter). It also conserves wetlands as clean water sources, improves soil quality in the area and enhances the resilience of surrounding communities.
